Windows Update: Microsoft Remote Desktop Security Changes

Posted 4/15/2026

A recent Windows Update (2026-04 Security Update KB5083769 - 26200.8246) introduced security changes designed to improve protection against phishing attacks that use Remote Desktop (.rdp) files. As a result, you may notice a change when connecting to the Hosting Service.

Once you have installed this update, opening an RDP file shows all requested connection settings before it connects, with each setting turned off by default. A one-time security warning also appears the first time you open the file on your device.

These prompts are expected, and are simply a change Microsoft implemented in its recent security update. There have been no related changes to ClinicTracker, and this does not indicate any security concern. It should be fine to acknowledge the prompts, which may only appear the first time you try to connect from a device, depending on your system configuration.

For more information, please see the following article from Microsoft:

To work around this new security enhancement, there is a registry change that has been known to not display the new prompts. Editing the registry needs to be done very carefully by someone with access and knowledge of what it is adjusting on the system. This is not something we can recommend doing or can support, and are simply sharing this workaround that has been developed by people in a similar situation who are trying to avoid the prompts. Microsoft has indicated that while this method will work currently, they may stop supporting it in the future.

If you and your IT support would like to implement this workaround, you can find a registry file at the following link:
